What is CME?
Continuing Medical Education (CME) consists of educational activities which serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional performance and relationships that a Physician Assistant uses to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession. Continuing education (CE) applies to all licensed medical professionals.
Certification: To maintain NCCPA certification, PA’s are required to complete 100 hours of CME every 2 years. For PAs who practice under a state license which does not require NCCPA certification, you must complete the hour requirement of CMEs, required by your state license and set by your local VA facility’s by-laws.
Licensure: PAs must possess an active, current, full, and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. PAs must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active and current licensure in that State.
Through the Talent Management System (TMS), there is a monthly Physician Assistant Educational Series. This is a live, AAPA accredited, 1 hour virtual event on various relevant topics for PAs. You must register through TMS prior to the presentation to receive credit. Information is sent out monthly via email on upcoming presentation topics.
TMS also offers many other courses on various topics that can be self-assigned to your learning plan

The VHA National Desktop Library is also a great resource. The VHA National Desktop Library is an online medical library available to staff VA-wide that provides full-text access to clinical textbooks, journals and databases. These resources are for VA staff only and some resources in the Desktop Library will link to sites on the VA Intranet, requiring access through the VA network or VPN.. If you wish to provide health related information to your patients or their caregivers, please visit the Veterans Health Library.
The VHA has a history in employing PAs, has been progressive in changing the way PAs practice in the VA, and offers many benefits for PAs who chose to work in the VA. As the single largest employer of physician assistants(pdf) in the nation, VA can offer you a wide range of challenging opportunities across the continuum of care.
